Projected Memories (2000) is a 16mm film installation that investigates the power of religious and familial hierarchies that continue to influence adult lives. Three black and white film loops are suggestive, but not definitive, leaving room for personal memories. The visual phrases include a young woman at a swing set with an unwelcome voyeur, a young girl exiting a church in front of a statue of Jesus and a woman in a translucent straight jacket turning in the river. They are projected from three hanging, angled 16 mm film projectors that include a looping apparatus. The images flick onto and through three fabric panels that are delicately embroidered with the commands: Devotion, Submission and Obedience and are reminiscent of altar cloths and marriage sheets from various cultures. The projection is both clear and slightly obscured on the back wall of the gallery. Audio interviews about difficult religious experiences form the audio track and can be heard to alternate from various speakers in the gallery.
