Motion Pictures is a series of video cinemagraphs, where the image appears motionless until subtle motion is recognized. These images are perhaps the most directly related to the history of “mediation,” in which the touristic image is amplified by Hollywood tropes. Here a GoPro camera becomes a second mediator, where the type of interpretive image within it varies and the frame-within-a-frame draws attention to its artifice. In these images, there is a contrast between the moving “mediated image” being held by a still hand and the far scene which also juxtaposes still and subtly moving images. This series is directly related to the concept of mediation of our surroundings, our experience of the natural world and touristic locations coming through a plethora of glass darkly.
